TeaPot Cozy

by Pam Black   (August 2009)

There was a little teapot that needed a cozy.
All it took was a crochet hook and some cotton yarn … and … VOILA!

This was made to cover a teapot that is not used frequently so I wanted it to be both a cozy to help keep
the tea warm and a cover for when the teapot is not in use.  I think the teapot is fairly standard.  It holds
about 42 ounces if you fill it almost to the top.  It’s about 5 inches tall – not counting the lid – and about
21 ½ inches around – not counting the handle and spout.

My gauge is approximately 4 stitches per inch and 4 rows per inch.

Stitches used:  ch=chain;  sc=single crochet;  hdc=half-double crochet;  dc=double crochet

This is not meant to be an exact pattern but more like a guide.  After every row, I put the piece on the
teapot to check for fit.  It’s made in rounds, but do not join each round; mark the first stitch of each round
to keep track of where each round begins and just crochet in each stitch.

Round 1:     Ch 13, sc second ch from hook and in next 11 ch, do not turn, do not join.   (12 sc)

Round 2:     2 sc in first sc, 2 sc in each of the next 11 sc.   (24 sc)

Round 3:     Sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end.   (36 sc)

Round 4:     Sc in first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end.   (45 sc)

Round 5:     Sc in first 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end.   (54 sc)

Round 6:     Sc in first 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end.   (63 sc)

Round 7:     Sc in first 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end.   (72 sc)

Round 8:     Sc in first 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end.   (81 sc)

Round 9:     Sc in first 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat to end.   (90 sc)

Since I wanted to cover the entire teapot, I wanted this to be more of an oval than a circle.

Round 10:     Sc in first 20 sc, hdc in next sc, dc in next 3 sc, hdc in next sc, sc in nest 40 sc, hdc in next sc,
dc in next 3 sc, hdc in next sc, sc in next 20 sc.   (90 sts)

Round 11:     Sc in first 19 sc, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 38 sc, hdc in
next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 29 sts.   (90 sts)

Round 12:     Sc in first 20 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next 40 sts, hdc in next st,
dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next 20 sts.   (90 sts)

Round 13 thru 23: Sc in each st.  Fasten off.   (90 sts)

In order to minimize the step effect on the edge of Round 1, when you weave in the end, pull the yarn thru
the unused chain on the last stitch of Round 2 and secure with a slip knot, then continue to weave in the
rest of the tail as usual.
